Cheap Thanksgiving Getaways in the South: Five Drives From Upstate SC, With the Gas and Room Math
Five Thanksgiving trips from Greer, SC, priced for two people and two nights: gas plus the cheapest well-reviewed room Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026. Totals run from $133.43 in Gatlinburg to $203.51 on Tybee Island. Holiday rates can run higher, so check your dates. Plus what is open, closed and free that week.
Thanksgiving hands a lot of families a few days off in a row and no plan for them. The airline-and-resort lists that come up for “cheap Thanksgiving getaways” do not help much if you live in the Upstate and the car is the plan.
So we priced the drive. For seven towns within about five and a half hours of Greer, we searched Google Hotels for Wednesday, November 25 to Friday, November 27, two adults, one room, and added the gas there and back. Five came in cheap enough to recommend. Two did not, and they are at the bottom with their numbers so you can see why.
The five trips, cheapest first
| Trip | Drive from Greer | Gas, round trip | Two nights (listed Oct 21) | Gas + room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gatlinburg, TN | 138 mi, about 3 hr 10 min | $42.17 | $91.26 | $133.43 |
| Hendersonville, NC | 38 mi, about 1 hr | $11.65 | $137.16 | $148.81 |
| Bryson City, NC | 117 mi, about 2 hr 35 min | $35.85 | $125.62 | $161.47 |
| Dahlonega, GA | 141 mi, about 2 hr 55 min | $43.18 | $127.46 | $170.64 |
| Tybee Island, GA | 273 mi, about 5 hr 25 min | $83.63 | $119.88 | $203.51 |
Four of the five come in under $175 for two people and two nights. Parking fees are not in these totals. Where a trip has one (the Smokies parking tag, Tybee’s beach parking), it is spelled out in that town’s section.
How the numbers work
The room is the cheapest nightly rate Google Hotels listed from a place rated 4.0 or better by at least 100 guests, and within 5 miles of the town center. Without that last rule, the cheapest “Bryson City” room is in Cherokee. Rates are what Google showed on October 21, before taxes and fees. We searched for Thanksgiving week, but Google returned the same rates when we tried other dates, so treat these as the rates listed that day, not a confirmed holiday price. Holiday rooms can cost more and sell out, so search your own dates before you count on these totals.
The gas is the round-trip driving distance from Greer, divided by 25 miles per gallon, times the AAA South Carolina average for regular on October 21: $3.833 a gallon. Drive times are routing estimates with no traffic. Holiday traffic will add time, so leave early.
Food is not in the total. That is on purpose. Restaurant meals for two add up fast, and food is the one line you can control. If you want to cook the dinner yourself, pick a room with a kitchen or a microwave and pack a cooler from home.
Gatlinburg, TN: the cheapest room of the seven, $133.43
Gatlinburg is a pricey town on most weekends, so this one was unexpected. The Gatlinburg Mountain Inn listed $45.63 a night, rated 4.3 by 556 guests and about a third of a mile from the center of town. The only cheaper room on the page was rated 3.4.
One free thing in town works well on a busy holiday: the Gatlinburg Trolley, which charges no fares or fees to ride.
The national park starts at the edge of town. Great Smoky Mountains National Park has no entrance fee, but any car parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs a parking tag: $5 for a day or $15 for a week. Two days in the park is $10, which is not in the total above. The Park Service’s seasonal road list shows the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) both open through November 29, so Thanksgiving weekend is the last chance this year to drive them.
Holiday weeks are busy in Gatlinburg. Expect slow going on the Parkway through town and full lots at the popular trailheads.
Hendersonville, NC: the short drive, $148.81
At about an hour from Greer, Hendersonville is the trip you can decide on Tuesday night. The room was the Quality Inn & Suites Hendersonville - Flat Rock at $68.58 a night, rated 4.2 by 631 guests. There was a $34.92 motel on the same search, rated 3.0, which is why the rating rule exists.
The free stop is the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, a few minutes south. The Park Service lists no entrance fee and says house tours are free, first come, first served, with the grounds open sunrise to sunset. Its hours page does not say whether the park is open on Thanksgiving Day itself, so call 828-693-4178 before you plan Thursday around it.
Downtown parking is paid most of the week. The city’s parking page says on-street meters and the city lots are free all day on Sundays and City Holidays, and before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m.; check the city’s holiday list for Thanksgiving week. Otherwise meters are $0.50 for 15 minutes, the deck and lots are $0.75 per 30 minutes with a $10 maximum per session, and there are more than 400 free on-street spaces with time limits. The page lists no free hours for the deck.
Bryson City, NC: the quiet side of the Smokies, $161.47
Bryson City puts you at the North Carolina side of the same national park, with less of the traffic. The room was Two Rivers Lodge and Cabins at $62.81 a night, rated 4.2 by 414 guests and about 4 miles from downtown. If you would rather stay closer to downtown, the Relax Inn was $64.40 with the same 4.2 rating. And if you do not mind sleeping in Cherokee, the Econo Lodge there was $59.24.
The same Smokies rules apply here: no entrance fee, and the $5-a-day parking tag for anything over 15 minutes. The park itself is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The road through the middle, Newfound Gap Road, stays open year-round when the weather allows, per the Park Service’s seasonal road page.
Dahlonega, GA: the gold-rush square, $170.64
Dahlonega’s courthouse square is the reason to go, and the timing works in your favor. The town’s visitor site, dahlonega.org, says the square is lit with white lights the day after Thanksgiving, with a tree lighting at 6 p.m. in front of the Visitor Center, and that horse-drawn carriage rides start that night. The page does not list a 2026 date or any prices, so check it before you count on Friday night.
The room was the Days Inn by Wyndham Dahlonega University Area at $63.73 a night, rated 4.1 by 946 guests, under a mile from the square. For comparison, the historic Smith House downtown listed $125 a night.
One thing to know before Thursday: the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site, the old courthouse in the middle of the square, is closed on Thanksgiving Day. The rest of the week it costs $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $7 for ages 6 to 17, and a Georgia ParkPass does not cover it.
Tybee Island, GA: the beach option, $203.51
Tybee is the long drive on this list, about five and a half hours, and the gas alone is $83.63. The trade is the ocean in late November. The Royal Palms Motel listed $59.94 a night, rated 4.4 by 571 guests, a couple of blocks from the center of the island.
The beach, the pier and the sunsets cost nothing; Visit Tybee lists them among the island’s free things. Parking is the cost. The city’s parking page lists public parking at $4 an hour or $25 for a 24-hour pass, paid by app or kiosk. Two beach days would add $50 to the total, so ask the motel where its guests park before you pay for a spot.
The Tybee Island Light Station is closed on Thanksgiving Day and on Tuesdays. Other days, admission is $14 for adults and $12 for ages 6 to 17, 62 and over, and military, with 5 and under free.
If you go to Tybee, Savannah is on the way home, and its squares are free to walk. Our free downtown Savannah walk covers that day.
The two we priced and left off
Savannah, GA. Staying downtown is the expensive part. The cheapest well-reviewed room within 5 miles of the center was The Grant at $95 a night, which makes the trip $268.23 with gas. Cheaper rooms showed up near I-95 on the south side, but if you are driving into Savannah anyway, Tybee’s rooms were cheaper and closer to the water.
Edisto Beach, SC. The only well-reviewed place near the beach was Club Wyndham Ocean Ridge at $235.73 a night. With gas, that is $542.61 for the two nights. Edisto is a quiet beach town, but it is not a cheap Thanksgiving.
Where to stay for less
The rooms above are the floor we found on October 21. A few things that moved the price in this search:
- Search your own dates. Google returned the same rates for every date we tried, so holiday-week prices may differ from these.
- Look one town over. Cherokee beat Bryson City by a few dollars, and Flat Rock is where the Hendersonville room actually sits.
- Skip the cheapest number on the page. In Gatlinburg, Hendersonville and Tybee, the lowest rate belonged to a place rated under 3.5.
- A campsite is cheaper still. Our campground versus hotel math walks through when a tent beats a room, though late November nights in the mountains get cold.
The honest caveats
Every rate here is what Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026, before taxes and fees. We asked for November 25 to 27, but the same rates came back for other dates too, so they are not a confirmed Thanksgiving-week price. Holiday rooms can sell out or cost more. Gas assumes 25 miles per gallon at the South Carolina average. The totals leave out food, park parking and admission, and they are for two people sharing one room. Thanksgiving Day hours were not posted for every stop, so the ones we could not confirm say “call” above.
If the Blue Ridge Parkway is on your way, it is free to drive; see our free Blue Ridge Parkway drive and check the Park Service’s road status before you go, because sections close for weather in late fall.
Where did your family spend the Thanksgiving you remember best, and was it home or on the road?
Rooms: Google Hotels via hotel-goat, checked October 21, 2026, two adults, nightly rate as listed before taxes and fees. We searched November 25-27, 2026, but Google returned the same rates for other dates, so these are listed rates, not confirmed holiday-week prices. Room rule: cheapest rate rated 4.0 or better with at least 100 reviews, within 5 miles of the town center. Drive miles and times: OSRM routing from Greer, SC, checked October 21, 2026. Gas: AAA South Carolina regular average $3.833 on October 21, 2026 at 25 mpg.
